Squid Game director and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk opened up about the possibility of making the third saga of the series. Hwang Dong-hyuk said he was in discussions with Netflix regarding the making of Squid Game 2 and 3.
However, Hwang Dong-hyuk was reluctant to reveal further details because it was still in the planning process. He also said that the decision regarding the third season of the series he was working on would be decided in the near future.
“I’m in talks with Netflix about season 2 and season 3 (Squid Game),” Hwang Dong-hyuk said as reported by Yonhap on Tuesday (28/12).
“We will come to a conclusion in the near future,” he continued.
Hwang Dong-hyuk said that the continuation of the Squid Game story will tell the story of Gi-hun, the final winner of the game who defeated 455 other participants and got 45.6 billion won in cash.
Previously, it was confirmed that Squid Game would continue into a second season. The story idea of Squid Game 2 is already in the mind of the director.
I think it’s too early to say when and how it will happen. So I promise you, Gi-hun [the main character in Squid Game] will come back and he will do something for the world,” said Hwang Dong-hyuk.
The Squid Game series has reportedly become the biggest TV show ever on Netflix. The series has also won several awards at the international level.
Squid Game won a special award at the 2021 American Film Institute (AFI) on Wednesday (8/12) US time. Squid Game is one of three winners of the special award, in addition to Belfast and Summer of Soul.
One day earlier (7/12), Squid Game was named The Bingeworthy Show of 2021 at the People’s Choice Awards. Not only that, as reported by Yonhap on Thursday (9/12), the series made by director Hwang Dong-hyuk won the Breakthrough Series category trophy at the 2021 Gotham Awards.
Squid Game was also announced to receive three nominations at the 2022 Golden Globe Awards, namely in the best television series category, best drama television series actor for Lee Jung-jae, and best television drama supporting actor for O Yeong-su.
