Ghostface managed to topple Spider-Man from the top of the North American domestic box office last weekend. Scream 5 opened its first weekend with $30.6 million.
Variety reported on Sunday (16/1), that this amount could increase to US$35 million considering that January 17, 2022 is a holiday in the United States commemorating Martin Luther King Jr.
Scream’s achievement removed Spider-Man: No Way Home from the top position. The Marvel superhero film finally had to step down after occupying the box office since it was first released last December. The acquisition of the Scream saga after eight years of hiatus is an extraordinary achievement for the fifth film in the franchise, considering the production cost of ‘only’ US $ 25 million.
Variety said that this figure also shows a positive trend in the film industry considering that Covid-19 cases are experiencing a spike after the emergence of the Omicron variant.
The film, which has been airing since January 14, brings back old faces such as Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette. They are again haunted by a serial killer with the legendary Ghostface mask.
The fifth installment in the Scream saga is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet. They replaced Wes Craven who died in 2015. Wes Craven is known as the horror film mogul and the director behind the four previous Scream films.
Chris Aronson, Paramount’s head of domestic distribution, praised the performance of the duo Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillet for the new energy the film brings. “They are reinvigorating the franchise for old fans and introducing this (saga) to new fans,” Aronson said as reported by Variety.
Despite being at number two at the box office this week, Spider-Man: No Way Home still achieved brilliant numbers. The film directed by Jon Watts earned US $ 20.8-26 million this long weekend.
The film is also listed as soon as the fourth highest-grossing film of all time behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avengers: Endgame, and Avatar.
Meanwhile, the third position was filled by the animated musical film Sing 2 with revenues of US $ 8.3 million. The 355 and The King’s Man were below him with the same revenue, US $ 2.3 million.
