Spider-Man: No Way Home & Matrix Resurrections On Oscars 2022 VFX Shortlist

The Academy Award for Best Visual Effects shortlists 2021’s blockbuster films, which include Spider-Man: No Way Home and the Matrix Resurrections.

Ten of 2021s blockbuster films have been selected for a spot on the 2022 Oscars nominations list for visual effects, and the list includes Spider-Man: No Way Home as well as The Matrix Resurrections. The nominees will be announced on February 8, 2022. The most recent Academy Awards (the 93rd) was a unique ceremony as the film industry was heavily affected by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. With cinemas being closed, plenty of films had to reschedule their original release dates, with long-awaited films like Daniel Craigs last James Bond film, No Time To Die, being delayed. The Oscars eventually took place on the April 25, 2021, handing out awards to the biggest films that were released that year in a COVID-19-friendly manner.

Most of the 2021 Oscar winners were received quite well by the public, but all eyes were on the Best Actor Award. It was a surprise to many that its spot was moved to the end, where the Best Picture award usually takes place. The two actors who were the favorites to win the award were Anthony Hopkins, for his outstanding performance in The Father, and the late Chadwick Boseman, for his amazing performance in Ma Raineys Black Bottom. Many saw this moment as the perfect opportunity to honor Bosemans excellent career, which sadly ended short due to his battle with colon cancer, passing away in August of 2020. The Best Actor award was won by Anthony Hopkins for his incredible performance as a man struggling with dementia, which came as a shock by the public who preferred Boseman to take the prize. Now, news on the 2022 ceremony and nominees is starting to roll out.

The Playlist reveals that the Academy Awards Visual Effects team has decided to list ten blockbuster films for their nominee shortlist, not including their more traditional choices of lesser-known gems. The films include Black Widow, Dune, Eternals, Free Guy, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Godzilla vs. Kong, No Time To Die, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and finally The Matrix Resurrections. Nine out of the ten films are either MCU films or a reboot/continuation of a classic franchise, with the exception being Ryan Reynolds Free Guy.

The latter two films were 2021s most anticipated films. Tom Holland recently joked about Spider-Man No Way Home winning him an Oscar, but so far, the British actor has been spot on. The film has already broken records and will continue to do so in the coming weeks, claiming accolades such as the film having the second-biggest opening weekend of all time. Along with that, the legendary Matrix franchise recently returned to the big screen with The Matrix Resurrections releasing today in theaters. The film marks the return of Keanu Reeves as the iconic character, Neo.

The Oscars have always been one of the most discussed ceremonies of the calendar year, with many inputting their own thoughts and opinions on whether the winners deserved their win. The Matrix itself did collect the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in the 72nd Academy Awards back in 1999. On the other hand, the MCU has had ten nominations for the award but has lost out on each occasion. This year, Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Matrix Resurrections are certainly up against tough competition. The current holder of the award is Christopher Nolans Tenet, but it will be interesting to see which blockbuster film takes the crown next year.
