The Book Of Boba Fett Gets A Star Wars

Times Square, in which Boba Fett himself appears in 3D. The Book of Boba Fett was the most recent Star Wars TV series to hit Disney+. The series premiered on December 29, 2021 and followed Fett (Temuera Morrison) and mercenary Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) on Tatooine as they take over Jabba the Hut’s former territory. The Book of Boba Fett also frequently cuts to the past and sees Fett join a tribe of Tusken Raiders, thus showing what took place between The Return of the Jedi and The Mandalorian. The series received some mixed reviews from critics and audiences, and many felt that the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu stole the show once they appeared in The Book of Boba Fett episode 5. However, most agreed that Morrison’s performance was one of the highlights of the series and brought more emotion to Fett’s anti-hero story. While there aren’t plans for a Book of Boba Fett season 2, Morrison may still yet reprise his role in other Star Wars projects, such as the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series. As shared by the official The Book of Boba Fett Twitter account, Times Square recently debuted a mind-blowing 3D billboard featuring Morrison’s character. LG and Industrial Light & Magic brought the spectacle to life in hopes of showcasing one of Star Wars most memorable characters.

Not only did the installation recreate a stunning, life-like 3D illusion of Fett, but it also preserved the essence of Fett that is present in Star Wars. The billboard was actually created utilizing a human actor, to give him a believable gait and fluid movements. Additionally, the billboard was designed to give Fett the exact same level of detail as in the Book of Boba Fett. The billboard captures the Star Wars character’s helmet, jetpack, weapons, and every detail down to the chinks in his armor. In so meticulously preserving detail, it manages to replicate the legacy of Fett in a completely new setting and bring the fan-favorite character from Tatooine to New York.

This 3D billboard also goes to show the immense progress made in marketing technology. Back in 2002, when Morrison first appeared in Star Wars, such a spectacle would’ve been unheard of. However, in 2022, Fett’s return was celebrated by bringing his character to life outside of a TV screen and in close proximity to audiences. With technological advancements like these, the legacy of some of TV and films most iconic characters can be reframed and celebrated in unique ways. To see a life-like Fett march above the heads of tourists in Times Square is certainly an eye-catching nod to Morrison’s performance as the bounty hunter. The Book of Boba Fett’s 3D billboard is an ingenious and creative way to bring Fett to viewers in a completely new medium.
