Watch these nominated films before the awards show

The 2022 Academy Awards will be held Sunday, March 27, so there is still time to watch the nominated films. From Best Picture to Best Costume Design, there are many award-worthy movies available for streaming.

West Side Story

Reimagined by legendary director Steven Spielberg, “West Side Story” tells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City. The film stays true to the original, released in 1962 with music by the late Steven Sondheim. The cast includes Ansel Elgort (Tony); Rachel Zegler (María); Ariana DeBose (Anita); David Alvarez (Bernardo); Mike Faist (Riff); Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino); Ana Isabelle (Rosalía); Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank); Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke); and Rita Moreno (as Valentina, who owns the corner store in which Tony works).

Belfast

The film is described as a period piece about a young boy named Buddy (played by Jude Hill) growing up in Northern Ireland during a time of conflict and violence. When Buddy’s family goes into lockdown, they have to decide whether to stay in the city they know and love or leave their home for a chance at a more peaceful life. The film is semi-autobiographical for Director Kenneth Branagh. The cast also includes Lewis McAskie, Caitriona Balfe, Jamie Dornan, Judi Dench, Ciarán Hinds and Josie Walker.

CODA

“CODA” stands for “Child of Deaf Adults,” which is the theme of this Oscar-nominated film. Ruby (played by Emilia Jones) is the youngest of the Rossi clan, who are all deaf except for her. Ruby is a high school teen with dreams of becoming a professional singer, but the responsibility of her home holds her back from her dreams. The cast includes Patrick Stewart, Katie Holmes, Troy Kotsu, Giancarlo Esposito and Letitia Brookes.

Dune

Adapted from Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel of the same name, “Dune” is set thousands of years in humanity’s future. The development of faster-than-light travel has allowed humans to colonize within a vast number of worlds. Following a fight against computers, there has been a ban on any kind of “thinking machine” and the creation or possession of such is punishable by immediate death. “Dune” stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides; Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica; Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides; Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck and Zendaya as Chani.

King Richard

The story of all-star sisters Serena and Venus Williams early life is told through the lens of their father, Richard, in this film. Tracing back to their younger years growing up and attending strict tennis practices, “King Richard” details their father’s love and his passion for them to succeed. The cast stars Will Smith as Richard Williams; Aunjanue Ellis as Oracene “Brandy” Williams; Jon Bernthal as Rick Macci; Saniyya Sidney as Venus Williams; and Demi Singleton as Serena Williams.

Licorice Pizza

“Licorice Pizza” tells the coming of age story of two teens from completely different worlds fall in love. Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman), an aspiring actor, meets Alana Kane (Alana Haim), whom he develops feelings for and sees himself marrying her one day. The pair decide they want to help each other work and explore different – and often, comical – business ventures. The film stars Bradley Cooper as Jon Peters, Sean Penn as Jack Holden, Benny Safdie as Joel Wachs, and Skyler Gisondo as Lance.

Encanto

We don’t talk about Bruno, but “Encanto” has definitely been a hot topic this year. The Disney film centers on the Madrigals, a family living in an enchanted house in the mountains of Colombia. Every child but one in their family has been granted a unique ability such as strength or healing powers. Throughout the film, 15-year-old Mirabel Madrigal is on the search for her purpose and why she is the only one in her family with no special powers. With music by Lin Manuel-Miranda, the cast of “Encanto” includes Stephanie Beatriz, John Leguizamo, Diane Guerrero, Jessica Darrow, Maluma, Wilmer Valderrama, María Cecilia Botero, Olga Merediz, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Rhenzy Feliz, Adassa, Angie Cepeda, Carolina Gaitán, Mauro Castillo and Alan Tudyk.
