Whether You Watch in The Theater or at Home Movies of 2021

How’d that happen? Quickly, it seems. And in the last six months the world has started to open up as people emerge, vaccinated (one hopes), from the COVID-19 pandemic.

That means, for some people, going back to theaters to see movies, there have been some good ones.

That’s what we’re looking at here, the best movies of 2021 — so far. Not all were in theaters; some appeared on streaming services. Some, both.

We’re platform agnostic here. If it’s good, it’s good, no matter where you see it.

As always with this kind of list, the ranking changes by the minute, practically, depending on mood, whimsy, whatever. In other words, No. 8 today might be No. 6 tomorrow, and No. 10 might drop off the list completely.

Except for No. 1. There’s no doubt about that.

With that in mind, off we go:

Fast & Furious 9

Fast and Furious 9 is a 2021 American action film directed by Justin Lin from a screenplay by Daniel Casey and Lin.[9] It is the sequel to The Fate of the Furious (2017), the ninth main installment, and the tenth full-length film in the Fast & Furious franchise. The film stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Michael Rooker, Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell, and Charlize Theron. In F9, Dominic Toretto and the team come together to stop a world-shattering plot headed by Toretto’s brother, Jakob.

Free Guy

Free Guy – Eroe per gioco is a 2021 American science fiction action comedy film directed by Shawn Levy from a screenplay by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn, and a story by Lieberman. The film stars Ryan Reynolds (who also produced) as a bank teller who discovers he is actually a non-player character in an open-world video game and decides to become the hero of the story and save his friends from deletion by the game’s creator (Taika Waititi). Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, and Utkarsh Ambudkar also star.

Following a year-long delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Free Guy was theatrically released in the United States on August 13, 2021, in RealD 3D, IMAX and Dolby Cinema by 20th Century Studios. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the clever concept and compared it favorably as a combination of Ready Player One, The Truman Show, The Matrix, and Grand Theft Auto.
